Comcast launches 3G, 4G service in Houston
Comcast Corp. launched its high-speed wireless data service in Houston this week, adding its name to the growing list of local competitors in the wireless data market.
Comcast’s “High-Speed 2go” offers customers that own portable computers access to Sprint Co. and Clearwire Communications' 3G and 4G data networks.
In late March, Kirkland, Wash.-based Clearwire Communications LLC expanded into the Houston area with its mobile Internet service. Sprint launched its 4G wireless service in March as well.
Comcast is selling its new wireless service bundled with one or more of its Internet, phone and television products, according to spokesman Michael Bybee. The new Comcast 3G or 4G service will be bundled with wired connectivity for the home for $54.99 for the first 12 months. That will include a wi-fi router. Existing home customers can add the 3G or 4G wireless service for $40 more a month, Comcast said.
Philadelphia-based Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) invested in Clearwire in 2008, making it a logical partner for its offerings.
