St. Louis one of the most stressful cities
With an unemployment rate of nearly 10 percent, St. Louis ranks as the fifth-most stressful city to work and live among America's 50 largest metros, according to a new study by Portfolio.com and bizjournals.
Portfolio.com and bizjournals created a 10-part formula to estimate the stress levels in the nation’s 50 biggest metros, using the latest data available from several government agencies and private firms. The study measured unemployment rates, income growth, poverty, deaths from circulatory-system diseases, sunshine, unhealthy air, robberies, murders, commuting and housing costs.
The nation's most stressed-out cities are Detroit, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Riverside, Calif. Rounding out the list of the most stressful markets after St. Louis are New York City, New Orleans, Chicago, Birmingham and Miami-Fort Lauderdale.
Salt Lake City ranks as the nation’s least-stressful metropolitan area with the lowest murder rate of any major metro, low unemployment and one of the nation's shortest commutes. Other markets with low levels of stress, ranking from second through 10th place, are Virginia Beach-Norfolk, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Raleigh, Austin, Oklahoma City, Denver, San Antonio, Kansas City and Phoenix.
