Take advice to avoid debt

As high interest rates continue to put a squeeze on family spending power, a new Bournemouth-based counselling service is offering tips on how to stay solvent this Christmas.

The timely advice comes after the wife of “back from the dead” canoeist John Darwin claimed he had faked his death to escape their crippling debts.

Anne Darwin said her husband had planned his disappearance because he thought it was the only way out of their mounting financial problems.

Last month the Christians Against Poverty charity set up a new debt counselling service at the House of Destiny Church in Elliott Road, West Howe.

Manager Samantha Oak said: “Christmas can be such a difficult time for many, especially those in debt.

“There are many families who are struggling and we have some top tips to help them stay solvent.

“Our aim is to offer a solution which empowers people to take control of their finances once more.”

The charity helped one family keep a roof over the heads this Christmas after they had received a repossession order for their home.

With the help of CAP, the property was saved and a budget drawn up to help the family make repayments and work towards becoming debt-free.

Sam recommends saving up for Christmas instead of paying for it on credit. If you haven’t put money aside this year, start saving for next Christmas.

Create a Christmas budget based on what you can afford and stick to it. Don’t be seduced by the bright lights and advertisements in shop windows.

If money is tight, talk to your family. If children are old enough explain the financial situation.

Just give presents to people you want to and if money is stretched, make gifts. You don’t need to buy affection.

Avoid the January sales; spend only what you have budgeted for and resist trying to buy the romantic idyllic image of Christmas.

Samantha added: “We are sold a picture of Christmas with functional families and holly encrusted halls.

“Unfortunately it normally rains and you don’t get on with your relatives.”
